Description and Uses:

Fagus sylvatica is a large deciduous tree that is distributed throughout central Europe to the Caucasus. Fagus sylvatica is a common woodland tree in the UK where it ultimately grows into a large, spreading tree with dense foliage making it too large for most garden situations. It does however make a fine hedge which will retain its leaves through the winter (marcescence) due to hard pruning maintaining juvenile growth.

Planting:

Plant bare-root transplants when dormant or container-grown plants at any time. Bare-root whips are commonly used for hedges and are planted in double rows.

Problems:

Aphids and beech bark scale, especially noticeable on hedges.

Propagation:

Propagate by seed.
