Description and Uses:

Hylotelephium Herbstfreude Group is a clump-forming, hardy, perennial with succulent stems to 0.5 – 1.0m in height, bearing heads of small, star-shaped pink flowers from late summer to autumn. The seed heads can be attractive through the early part of the winter. Useful in informal borders, gravel gardens, containers and wildlife gardens.
Long-flowering and attractive to insects.

Cultivation Requirements:

Grow in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full sun. Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil.

‘Sedum’ flower heads have a habit of becoming top heavy, this can be prevented by either regular division or cutting back new growth in May (‘Chelsea chop’). Both methods will encourage smaller flower heads that are less likely to fall over.

Hardiness H7

Planting:

Divisions can be replanted immediately or pot grown plants planted at any time, although best planted in the spring to avoid winter wet and ensure good establishment.

Problems:

Generally free from pests and diseases although slugs and snails may cause damage to foliage and vine weevil larvae can attack roots especially in containers. Can rot off in the Winter.

Propagation:

Propagate by division in spring.

Softwood cuttings (basal) in spring or early summer.

Self-sown seedlings often occur in gardens and these will generally resemble the parent plant.
